The Executive Chairman of Biomedia
Group,
Mr David Chung started his career
with National University of Singapore from 1968 to 1978, Dynatech Singapore Pte Ltd in 1980 and Abbott Laboratories Pte Ltd in 1981, prior to the founding of Biomedia.
Since young, David has always held the belief that in order to maximise a person’s capabilities, one should undertake a career or business in the area where our passion lies and he has been fortunate enough to be able to do that. With the drive to make a difference in life and not just be a passive part of change, he left Abbott Laboratories to setup his own business. In 1981, he ventured into his first business operating from a 12 sq metre office selling biomedical and laboratory equipment and products. Back then, it was clear to him that he wanted to build an organisation that prides itself on professionalism and good customer service. His dream then was to have a building of his own that houses all his businesses.
Learning
The journey for David, similar to many successful entrepreneurs has not been smooth sailing. He had his fair share of setbacks and disappointments but has always bounced back with renewed vigor at every setback, turning setbacks into opportunities. His philosophy of “one never stops learning until one’s last day” was the reason for his pursuit of lifelong learning.
Relentless
As one who finds discomfort in stagnation, David continues to reinvent the organisation. “Knowledge is worthless until applied”, he has been described as visionary and relentless in his management approach by his peers and contemporaries. Where many would have rested on their laurels, David led the organisation in 2006 on an ASEAN-wide work culture reformation to position the Group for the next phase of growth. Under his stewardship, Biomedia Group is now an organisation that is well placed to ride the next wave of growth in Asia. When asked why he decided to move into manufacturing, his reply was that the business needed to diversify into manufacturing and having products of our own instead of solely being distributor.
Visionary
While operating in Singapore in his flat, he has set his sights on expanding his business from Asia to the Middle-East region. In the past 25 years of existence, the company has expanded into new markets, moving into manufacturing of pre-poured media and generic drugs, and owning proprietary technology in Lab-IT solutions catering to hospital laboratories and blood banks. The company has grown from a small trading company, into a Group of Companies and owns a manufacturing plant in Malaysia.
Looking back at his entrepreneurial journey that he has traveled, he did not regret his past actions and has learnt many precious experiences in the field of business and management. “An eye for order in chaos and vice versa”, an entrepreneur must constantly create change around him, the faster the change, the faster the company grows.
